Tattoo Aftercare
Proper aftercare is crucial to ensure the healing and longevity of your tattoo. Here are some general guidelines to follow:

-
Leave the initial Saniderm application on: Your tattoo artist will apply Saniderm over your fresh tattoo as a protective covering. Leave this initial application on for the duration recommended by your artist, typically 24-48 hours. This helps protect the tattoo from bacteria, friction, and exposure to the outside environment.
-
Avoid excessive moisture: While wearing Saniderm, it's important to avoid activities that can introduce excessive moisture, such as swimming, soaking in bathtubs, hot tubs, or saunas. Excessive moisture can cause the Saniderm to loosen prematurely, compromising its protective capabilities.
-
Clean your hands before touching the Saniderm: Before handling the Saniderm, make sure your hands are clean to avoid introducing any bacteria to the tattooed area.
-
Gently remove the Saniderm: When it's time to remove the initial Saniderm application, start by peeling one corner of the film and slowly and carefully pull it back at a 180-degree angle under running water. Take your time and avoid pulling the film upwards or away from the skin, as this can cause discomfort.
-
Clean the tattooed area: Once the Saniderm is removed, gently wash the tattooed area with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap. Use your clean hands and avoid using abrasive materials. Pat the area dry with a clean paper towel or let it air dry.
-
Apply a thin layer of ointment: Once the tattoo is clean and dry, apply a thin layer of Aquaphor or other tattoo-specific ointment recommended by your artist. Avoid petroleum-based products, as they can suffocate the skin. Apply the ointment gently and ensure it's evenly distributed. Repeat this step 2-3 times a day for the first few days.
-
Moisturize regularly: After a few days, switch to a fragrance-free, water-based lotion or moisturizer. Apply a thin layer to keep the tattoo moisturized and prevent excessive dryness or itching. Continue moisturizing until the tattoo is fully healed.
-
Do NOT use Vaseline, Petroleum, Poly/Neosporin or Tiger Balm, these products are either too strong for healing tattoos and can cause irritation or pull out ink, or they will trap bacteria, prevent airflow, and can lead to ink loss, so use tattoo-specific ointments instead, like Aquarphor, or unscented lotions or coconut oil or shea butter.
-
Avoid scratching or picking: It's normal for your tattoo to feel itchy during the healing process. However, resist the urge to scratch or pick at it, as it can damage the healing skin and lead to infections or color loss.
-
Avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds: Protect your tattoo from prolonged exposure to the sun or UV rays, as they can fade the colors and damage the healing skin. If you need to be in the sun, cover your tattoo with clothing or use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF.
-
Avoid swimming and soaking: Refrain from swimming, soaking in bathtubs, hot tubs, or saunas until your tattoo is fully healed. Excessive moisture can soften the scabs and increase the risk of infection.
-
Wear loose clothing: Choose loose, breathable clothing that won't rub against your tattoo. Tight clothing can irritate the skin and hinder the healing process.
-
Stay hydrated and eat well: Proper hydration and a healthy diet promote overall skin health and aid in the healing process. Drink plenty of water and eat nutrient-rich foods to support your body's healing capabilities.
-
Follow your artist's instructions: Every tattoo and artist may have specific aftercare instructions tailored to your tattoo's size, location, and style. Always follow your artist's advice and reach out to them if you have any concerns or questions during the healing process.

Remember, everyone's healing process is unique, and it may take several weeks for your tattoo to fully heal. If you notice any signs of infection, such as excessive redness, swelling, oozing, or prolonged pain, seek medical attention promptly.
By following these aftercare instructions and providing your tattoo with the proper care it needs, you can help ensure that your tattoo heals beautifully and maintains its vibrancy for years to come.
